Buddy Rice will compete this weekend in his first X Games at Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, in a Rallycross Volkswagen Polo prepared by Marklund Motorsport. Rallycross courses vary from venue to venue and are less than one mile per lap from standing start to flying finish with a tarmac to dirt mixture. There is always a large 70 foot crossover jump, a smaller tabletop jump and some tracks include a water element and banked hairpin turn. X Games never disappoints and will surely throw out an amazing track in Brazil.
This will be Rice's first time behind the wheel of the Global Rallycross car, but his adaptable racing style will be an advantage over other rookies. With no test time Rice has a plan to get up to speed quickly. “I'm going at this thing cold turkey. I'll be real green, but I'm going to be like a sponge. There are going to be lots of guys there with lots of talent, driver coaches will be on hand, so I'm just going to ask as many questions as I can. First off, I'm going to get in the thing, go drive it, feel it, check it out, and once I have that under control, start asking questions on how I can go faster and what I need to do.”
“With the addition of Rice to the Global Rallycross, we are taking the series to the next level,” said Colin Dyne, Global Rallycross CEO. “He has won two of the most prestigious and well known races in motorsports and will build on the already diverse background of competitors.”
Global Rallycross field for X Games Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil features one of the most talented and diverse driver pools ever assembled in motorsports. Along with Rallycross superstars like Travis Pastrana, Ken Block, Marcus Gronholm and Tanner Foust, Buddy Rice will be up against some local talent as well in the form of Nelson Piquet Jr. Brazilians always preform for their home crowd, but Rice is up for the challenge. “The support from the host countries and how they get behind racing is unbelievable,” describes Rice. “So it's going to be similar to the 24 Hours of Daytona, the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500, and the Coca-Cola 600—all of that stuff is so big, and the people behind it are going to be in the same kind of atmosphere. It's the same kind of excitement. It's going to be great! It's going to be unbelievable, and I'm looking forward to it.”
Rice has no expectations before leaving for Brazil, but when the helmet goes on in Foz do Iguaçu we will see him go for it 100%. “I'll do my best, and we'll see how far I get. Hopefully it turns out to be a good weekend for myself and VW. Hopefully we put on a good show for all the Global Rallycross fans.”
