Unique opportunities, challenging venues, and new ‘Midwest Shifterfest’ event to highlight upcoming season

TEMECULA, CA (March 12, 2013) – The Superkarts! USA brand is continuing to evolve and grow throughout the United States, and in 2013, there will be an emphasis on revitalizing the original region of the organization. The schedule for the 2013 Midwest ProKart Challenge has been confirmed, as the series will again take place over three weekends. One objective this season will be bringing back the enjoyment and excitement that is shifterkart racing, while providing that same SKUSA-style atmosphere and camaraderie that racers enjoy at other regional programs and on the SKUSA Pro Tour.
“2013 marks the 20th year that racers will bang gears under the Superkarts! USA banner here in the Midwest. Back then, it was a unique group of individuals who had two things in common – a kart with a transmission, and a desire to find others to race it against,” remembers SKUSA National Director Stan Bryniarski, a pre-tech and corner official at that time. “The Midwest is where SKUSA got its beginnings, and I was lucky enough to watch it grow as it did. Now I’m privileged to continue that tradition. It may not happen overnight, but I have no doubt we can make this region grow to what it used to be. I want to send a special thank you to all the racers for your patience and support.”
The class structure for 2013 Midwest ProKart Challenge will offer all nine of the SKUSA regional classes – S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, TaG Senior, TaG Master, TaG Junior, and TaG Cadet – but will also host an Open Shifter category at all three events. SKUSA is welcoming any and all shifterkarts in the area to come and compete, rather than leaving the karts in the garage collecting dust. Any engine models and makes will be included; ICC/KZ, Modified Moto, Yamaha, TM, and 80cc Gearbox.
“When SKUSA was first created, it was nothing but shifterkarts. I understand that more than anything,” stated SKUSA President Tom Kutscher. “The Great Lakes area is the foundation of our organization, and we need to regroup the old racers with the new racers -- get them all at the track at the same time. That’s our mission of providing the Open Shifter division. ‘Come one, come all,’ I say. You need to experience the atmosphere just once to understand how awesome SKUSA racing really is.”
To back that up, Superkarts! USA is offering an incentive-based prize package that will award the top three points leaders for this category, cumulatively, for each weekend of competition. For the opening weekend of the series in April -- should more than 10 racers compete in the Open Shifter class -- SKUSA will award the winner with a new set of MG Tires, second place with a free entry to the next event, and third place with free Friday practice and a pit space for that next stop on the schedule.
Those competing in the regular SKUSA categories will enjoy the same benefits that other regional programs across the country receive, including the SKUSA SuperNationals Priority Pre-Entry Program and the SuperSunday Guaranteed Grid Positions. Any Midwest PKC racer who enters the Pevely AND Shawano events will be granted a position in the Priority Pre-Entry Program for SuperNationals registration, which will be a set time period in which to enter before registration opens to the public. Then, the 2013 Midwest PKC class champions will not only gain a trophy to add to the mantel, but they will also earn a guaranteed starting spot on the Las Vegas SuperSunday main event grid in their respective category (class must average five racers for the year in order to receive SuperSunday ticket). When making the investment to travel to Las Vegas for the biggest race of the year, a direct pass into the Main Event is worth its weight in gold.
For 2013, the Midwest ProKart Challenge championship will host three double-race weekends for a six-round program, counting the best five races toward the final point standings. The opening two rounds are set for a return to the I-55 Raceway Complex in Pevely, Missouri, just south of St. Louis in April. Commonly called ‘Thunder Valley’, the track features hairpin turns and a banked Monza to ensure a challenge for all racers. The next stop will take the series north at the beginning of June to the US Air Motorsports Raceway in Shawano, Wisconsin – the site of the 2010 SKUSA SummerNationals. The Kenny Vernberg-designed sprint course is a true challenge to any racer and will be the only national event to visit this amazing circuit in 2013. The series concludes the 2013 season at the New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana. The state-of-the-art facility owned and operated by IndyCar driver Mark Dismore will host the final two rounds, which will also serve as the SKUSA ‘Midwest Shifterfest’. The series year-end awards banquet will follow the action on September 15 on site at New Castle.
2013 Midwest ProKart Challenge Schedule
April 19-21: I-55 Raceway - Pevely, Missouri
May 31- June 2: US Air Motorsports Raceway - Shawano, Wisconsin
September 13-15: New Castle Motorsports Park - New Castle, Indiana
The inaugural SKUSA Midwest Shifterfest will be the debut running of what is planned to be an annual event celebrating shifterkart racing in the East. With a focus on building an exciting purse and prize package, the plan will be to gather shifterkart drivers from all over the country. A solid purse featuring $1000-to-win is the initial plan for the Open Shifter category, providing the field meets the 10-kart minimum. Anything over that number will provide the motivation for expanding the purse. SKUSA is actively working to assemble great prizes and special events for the weekend, and shops interested in partnering with SKUSA on the growth of Shifterfest are asked to contact Stan Bryniarski directly. Racers should book off the weekend (September 13-15) and should also stay tuned for regular updates on the events throughout the year.
The Midwest ProKart Challenge online store will open and begin accepting discounted pre-registration for the I-55 Raceway event in Pevely on March 15 (www.skusastore.com). To follow the updates regarding the 2013 program, be sure to visit the Midwest PKC section on www.superkartsusa.com
