DAVID MALUKAS POSTS TWO WKA MAN CUP WINS AT NEW CASTLE

9/20/2012

Sept. 20, 2012 - David Malukas was one of only three double winners this past weekend at the McLaughlin Motorsports Grand Nationals, the sixth and final round of the 2012 World Karting Association Manufacturers Cup Series.

The 10-year-old Chicago racer wheeled his HMD Trucking No. 79 MKP Birel chassis to feature wins in Saturday's Cadet final and Sunday's Yamaha Sportsman contest. The wins were his fifth and sixth WKA Man Cup triumphs in the series' last four rounds.

Since breaking through with his first national win at Pittsburgh in May, Malukas has won at least one race in each Man Cup round, and boasts a 30 percent winning average since round three of the series in class's that regularly consist of 25 to 40 entrants.

"We've had a very good season in WKA and the other series we race," David commented at the end of the weekend. "It felt like we needed to win the first race (at Pittsburgh) and then the wins came easier. We were competitive in every class and the Birel karts had great speed all season. Thank you very much to my dad, my family, MKP, (tuner) Jason Birdsell, (coach) Wes Phillips and Doug Fleming's engines."

Malukas's Cadet score marked his fourth win of the season in the class. He swept the Saturday Cadet program, winning the Pole Award, prefinal and final in an impressive performance.

"We had it going in Cadet on Saturday!" said Malukas, his voice rising in excitement. "There are so many good racers in the class and it was a great accomplishment to win the qualifying, prefinal and final."

On Sunday, Malukas had to work hard to beat out top runners Neil Verhagen, Michael D'Orlando and Brandon Lemke in the Yamaha Sportsman main event. David passed D'Orlando on the final lap and battled Verhagen in a side-by-side finish to secure the win by only a half kart-length.

While Sunday's win in Yamaha Sportsman was a high point of the weekend, a low point came earlier in the day in Cadet Final 2. David was leading the race and in position to sweep the Cadet divisions and win the national championship, but on the last lap contact with another kart sent the No. 79 Birel off the track and stalled in the infield. David would settle for a disappointing 20th-place finish which ultimately cost him the championship.

"I was very disappointed after the Cadet race on Sunday but I have to keep my head up and look forward. We had a great season and almost won a championship. But we had some bad luck at times that cost us. Next year we can be more consistent and hopefully win a championship and maybe two or three!"

Unofficially, in the final WKA Man Cup national point standings, David finished second in the Yamaha Sportsman 2, third in Cadet, fourth in Komet Sportsman and sixth in Yamaha Sportsman 1.

Next up for Malukas is the Route 66 Sprint Series season closer Oct. 6-7 at Mid State Kart Club in Springfield, Illinois. Then the David Malukas Racing team will head back to New Castle Oct. 14 for the special Robo-Pong 200 event. November will see the team head west to Las Vegas for the big SKUSA Supernationals Sixteen.
