September 3, 2012 - Descending on the Jet Karting of Michiana Raceway Park facility near South Bend, Indiana, Rotax Micro Max driver Justin Sirgany would look to achieve United States Rotax Grand National glory and be crowned national champion. When the rain had finally subsided and the final checkered flag had flown, Sirgany would miss the top position by one spot as he came home second in his first visit to the Indiana facility.
Competing with an AM Engine powered Tony Kart, Justin got his weekend started off on the right foot with an impressive second place qualifying effort. After completing the three test days leading up to the event in dry conditions, Sirgany and his crew went to work in qualifying as the heavens opened and rain began to fall. Missing the pole position, the Tony Kart pilot would start each of his three heat races from the outside front row.
With rain continuing to fall Thursday afternoon, Micro Max competitors would be forced to use wet weather tires yet again in the first official wheel-to-wheel competition of the weekend. Getting a great start, disaster would strike for Sirgany as the pole sitter spun in front of him and the pair then made contact. High sided on the berm adjacent to the track, the entire field went by and Sirgany rejoined the race in the last position. Working hard to salvage as many positions as possible, an incredible drive would see the youngster move forward to the 11th position.
Friday would bring a different day of racing to Justin as heat two saw him lead his first laps on the weekend. Maintaining his second place starting position during the opening laps, Sirgany moved to the point on lap four only to be re-passed on lap nine as he fell back to second. A great rebound from the previous day's heat, Justin finished second. Heat three would see a quartet of drivers battle hard for the majority of the ten-lap event. Falling from second to fourth and losing touch with the lead duo, Sirgany hooked up with the third place driver as they utilized the draft to catch the leaders. The race ended in a four-kart train with Justin in fourth.
With heat race points calculated, Sirgany would start Saturday morning's prefinal from inside row three in the fifth position, under wet conditions. Looking to move up as many positions as possible, Sirgany went to work on his competitors as he advanced into the third position by the close of lap two and then up to second shortly thereafter. Chasing the leader down, Sirgany took over the top position and never looked back. Scoring the fastest lap of the race and the elusive pole position for the main event, Sirgany was now the driver to beat entering the final.
Feeling as if they were at a slight disadvantage in the dry, Sirgany hoped that the rain would continue, allowing him a good shot at the national title. With opening ceremonies complete and the sun now shining, all the Rotax Micro Max competitors would change their chassis setup for the slick Mojo tires. After starting on the pole position and maintaining the lead for the opening laps, Justin would lose it, but managed to slot himself into the second position. Drafting with the leader to pull away from the rest of the field, the duo would make it a two-kart affair to fight for the win.
After swapping the top spot on multiple occasions, Justin would try his hardest to maintain the point for the final few laps but could not hold off the advances of his rival. Crossing the stripe in the second position, Sirgany would claim the second step on the podium, narrowly missing the national championship.
Justin Sirgany would like to thank his family and friends for their continued support throughout the 2012 racing season. A special thanks to JFP and Black Velvet Topsoil, AM Engines and mechanics that put forth the effort to ensure he was at the front of the field. Justin would also like to thank his competitors for a great week of racing and special congratulations to Nicholas Brueckner and his team on their victory.
