August 29, 2012 - Traveling across the Midwest to arguably one of the most prestigious street racing events in the world, Indiana based McLaughlin Motorsports will have a fleet of drivers competing in the infamous Rock Island Grand Prix (RIGP). As part of the Quad Cities festivities over the Labor Day holiday weekend, drivers from around the world descend on the area to compete in a host of classes as they all look to score 'The Rock'.
"We have drivers competing in multiple different classes," explained McLaughlin Motorsports President Bill McLaughlin Jr. "From 125cc shifter to 100cc Yamaha, the whole crew is excited about the upcoming weekend."
Previous Rock Island Grand Prix winner Kurt Mathewson will look to find his way back to victory lane this coming weekend as he will compete aboard a MKPShop.com Birel in the 125 Masters Shifter division. Known for his speed and determination to win, Mathewson will be a threat for victory and one of the favorites in the class. Cole Mathewson, son of Kurt, will also be back behind the wheel of a MKPShop.com Birel as he will see action in the King of the Streets class.
Bill McLaughlin Jr. will compete in a quartet of classes as he looks to lead the team to victory. Running in the 2-Cycle Pro Open, TaG Senior and both Yamaha SuperCan Heavy and Medium divisions, McLaughlin has his sights set on the prize. No stranger to the street racing style atmosphere, McLaughlin often competes in the Indy Karting Series street race events scoring multiple race wins and podiums.
Longtime McLaughlin Motorsports driver Blake Diester will compete in the house built and prepared Victory Kart. Competing in the Yamaha Senior division, Diester will look to steer his Torq Racing Engines powered Victory Kart to the race win. Jackson Mears will see action in the same Yamaha division as Diester, but will on a MKPShop.com Birel banner.
Chase Jones will enter the TaG Junior class as the defening Rock Island Grand Prix champion of the class and will look to continue his winning ways. As one of the favorites in the class, Jones will utilize experience gained from last year in the attempt to stand atop the box once again.
McLaughlin added, "We are going to Rock Island to win and podium, nothing less. We can't wait to get there and get on track. The shop employees, led by long-time MKP member Dean Mack, have completed long hours of prep working leading up to the event and we would like nothing more than to reward them with a few victories."
