TEMECULA, CA (August 28, 2012) – The 2012 season for the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge will come to a close this weekend as competitors travel to Grand Junction Motor Speedway. The three-day event will crown the series champions, with plenty of prizes on the line thanks to the many series sponsors and supporters, including a guaranteed starting position on Super Sunday at the SuperNationals XVI in November for those earning a title in the Superkarts! USA nationally-recognized classes.
Returning back to Grand Junction, Colorado, site of the opening two rounds of the year, brings with it the Border War trophy. With the majority of the racers from either Utah or Colorado, the Border War trophy was introduced last year to bring on another form of competitive spirit amongst the teams and drivers. Last year, Utah earned the most points (1 point for pole, 1 point for heat win, 1 point for feature win) and look to retain possession of the Border War trophy for another year.
Utah drivers look good in the S1 category, sponsored by Wood Source, with three drivers at the top of the standings heading into the finale weekend. Mike Beeny leads by a good margin over Pro Tour podium finisher Bonnier Moulton with Tyler Bennett, the 10th ranked driver in the eKartingNews.com Stock Moto Driver Rankings sitting in third. The fight is tight in the CRG-USA-sponsored S2 Semi-Pro category with Colorado drivers Sabré Cook and Christian Bird neck and neck. Cook leads by just 65 points heading into the weekend. Alex Yates has a comfortable lead in the S3 Novice class, sponsored by Wood Source, thanks to his four straight wins this season. Chris Neria sits second with three runner-up finishes with the two drivers scheduled to end up 1-2 in the title chase. With two wins at Grand Junction during the opening weekend, Jet Davis remains in the point lead for the Wood Source-sponsored S4 Master Stock Moto category. David Conyers holds second, 115 points back before the drop with Scott Allen still in the chase.
Mianna Wick has a sizable lead in the S5 Junior Stock Moto category, sponsored by Miller Motorsports Park. Her three wins have her well out in front of Ryan Rudolph. Austin Versteeg will look to close the book in the TaG Junior title chase, sponsored by Billet Performance Karting. Versteeg holds a 223 point advantage heading into Grand Junction over Greggory Payseno. Just 40 points separate Derek Deslauriers and Riley Cook in the Miller Motorsports Park-sponsored TaG Cadet division. Both have a victory on their record with Deslauriers holding the advantage thus far. Tristin MacLeod is sitting in the wings, just a few points back in third. Brandon Southwick (CRG-USA sponsored TaG Senior) and Bob Rodrick (Wood Source-sponsored TaG Master) will attempt to close out the championships in their respective classes. In the local option Mini Max class, sponsored by Billet Performance Karting, Tevin Robbins leads Duncan Biles by just 10 points, leaving each and every session in Grand Junction that much more important.
Following the events on-track Sunday, Superkarts! USA and the Grand Junction Motor Speedway will honor the 2012 season champions at a banquet inside the pro shop. With doors opening at 7:00pm and the festivities scheduled to start at 7:30pm, a buffet-style dinner will be served with event and championship awards along with door prizes handed out during the evening. Among the bigger prizes up for grabs will be a new CRG chassis courtesy of CRG-USA. Competitors who have won a feature race aboard a CRG chassis during the series will earn one raffle ticket toward the drawing. The first ticket holder present will win the new kart, thanks to Grand Junction-based CRG-USA. Banquet tickets are available now via the SKUSA Store, with more information available on the banquet event page (www.superkartsusa.com/regional/rocky-mountain-pkc/event-calendar/awards-banquet.html)
