ECKC Report: Goodwood Kartways / Intrepid Canada

After a very impressive winter season, Goodwood Kartways / Intrepid Canada started racing North of the border a week ago as it began the 2011 Eastern Canadian Karting Championship on its home turf at Goodwood Kartways. With favoured drivers in a number of Rotax Max Challenge classes, Intrepid drivers from both Ontario and Quebec produced an exceptional weekend with six wins and seventeen total trips to the podium to spray champagne.

“The team did a great job in rounds one and two last weekend,” said Team Manager Marco Di Leo. “It was great to have podium results in Micro, Mini, Junior, Senior, Masters and Masters DD2 while racing at our home track. A number of drivers got a very positive start to their championships, and we will now look to carry the momentum into Trois-Rivieres where we can better ourselves in the standings.”

Di Leo includes himself in such a statement, as after sweeping a very competitive Rotax Senior class the Team Manager has created a very sound foundation as he looks to defend his ECKC Championship. Di Leo scored a pair of Intrepid’s eight pole positions, and the home team even locked out the front row Sunday in both Rotax Mini-Max and Rotax Junior. Artem Korolev and Jesse Lazare turned the trick in Junior, while Gerrit Tiemersma and Jordan Slipacoff owned Mini-Max. Lazare had a pole of his own on Saturday, as did Dany St-Hilaire and Francis Mondou of newly-formed Intrepid Quebec.

From there came the podiums and wins, with a few standing out from the rest in the fashion that they were formed. Goodwood Intrepid swept the Mini-Max class, with Karter Hickling winning on Saturday and Jordan Slipacoff winning on Sunday. Hicking won the ECKC Micro-Max Championship last year, but had to start his 2011 season from P7 on the grid after a throttle problem. He raced to second in the prefinal, then took the win in the final after a great three-way fight at the front. Teammate Slipacoff was also in that tussle, and crossed in third before losing the podium to a one-position penalty for contact. It was a situation he vowed to correct a day later, and sure enough he did.

“Jordan was ‘Da-Man’ in Mini-Max on Sunday,” said Di Leo. “He promised his mother a win on Mother’s Day, and delivered it. It was his first ever win in Mini-Max and his first ECKC win in any class.” It was a day that began from off-pole before Slipacoff won the prefinal with the fastest lap in the field. He then led early in the final, before enduring a red flag situation and falling to second when the race resumed. This time he stayed there to lap sixteen when he capitalized through turn eight and in the run to the final hairpin to take the lead. He then held it over the final two laps to score his Mother’s Day win.

Other highlights were a sweep of the Rotax Masters podium both days, and Francis Mondou taking a pair of second-place finishes in Masters DD2 in the first outing for Intrepid Quebec. Full Intrepid results can be seen below. The Eastern Canadian Karting Championship resumes May 29th at Karting Trois-Rivieres. A majority of the 28-strong Intrepid effort will be on hand, with others expected to make their 2011 ECKC debuts as well. For more information, please visit goodwoodkartways.com and eckc.ca
