At the second round of the WSK Euro Series in Portimao, the CRG team won both in KZ1, against the best drivers in the world, and in KF3, the category of the 13-15 years olds, which also had the highest number of participants with its 102 entered drivers. Congratulations to Jonathan Thonon and Max Verstappen! But the performances of Arnaud Kozlinski's and Mirko Torsellini's CRG-Maxters did not go unnoticed, either...
KZ1: Victory for Thonon, Podium for Koko
In southern Portugal one had always to look at the front of the pack to find traces of Jonathan Thonon's and Arnaud Kozlinski's CRG-Maxters. Koko started immediately with a brilliant pole position, preceding all the best drivers in the world! "With an engine developed directly by Maxter, the whole team was very satisfied with Koko's performances", CRG commented. CRG winning series continued with Kozlinski, Thonon but also with Davide Forè : all three of them were on the first two rows at the start of Final 1. After a very intense race, Thonon triumphed brilliantly. "Tyre wear is very high in Portimao and it is important to manage it well. My CRG chassis was very effective and with a perfect setup and this helped me a lot", commented the winner, equipped with a Maxter prepared by Tec-sav. After being 2nd for most of the race, unfortunately Kozlinski lost two places towards the end of the race and finished 4th.
On Sunday, the podium was within reach for the two drivers. But Thonon had to give up after he retired on the last lap, due to a drive train problem. "I think that without it I could have won again, as proven by my best lap time in the race". Kozlinski also set some impressive times; he never gave up and went back to his stand holding the second place cup in his hands!
KZ2: Torsellini with the Leaders
In KZ2, Mirko Torsellini showed the third best performance in cumulated KZ1-KZ2 timed qualifying! Luck was not always on his side afterwards, although he reached a fantastic second place in Final 1. The Italian driver never gave up and he is still aiming at the second place of WSK Euro Series provisional standings.
KF: Verstappen's Superiority
In KF3, Max Verstappen and his CRG chassis were once again impressive. "Since the beginning of the season I have shown my competitiveness in all the races (2nd in Lonato and Sarno, 3rd at La Conca). I have made it to the podium each time, although not on the highest step for a series of different reasons. So I was looking forward to winning again. It was easier than I had expected, I was competitive as usual. Portimao is a complete circuit, with lots of different bends, and my kart felt very comfortable in it", Max said. Indeed, the Dutch driver won three heats out of five, as well as the pre-final and final with a comfortable advantage of two and a half seconds! And now Max Verstappen has already 135 points in the Championship, while his immediate pursuer has just 61...
In KF2, things were not easy for Michelle Gatting in a very agitated pack. She lost some precious places in the final after a contact at the start of the race, but managed to climb up to 12th anyway.
Jordon Lennox-Lamb was the best CRG-Maxter driver in KF1 going up from 20th to 12th in Final 1. "Our Maxter engines have progressed well after the last race. We also improved our adjustments for Sunday and this time I classified 7th in Final 2. It is positive", the young British driver commented.
