Cole Glasson – Florida Winter Tour- W. Palm Beach

3/1/2011

Cole Glasson continued the 2011 season this past weekend in West Palm Beach at the 3rd and 4th round of the Florida Winter Tour Rotax Weekend. He spent two days with the DFR Team and his coach/tuner Chris Wehrheim earlier in the month at the track to try and prepare to make a run into the top five in points. The weekend ended with some solid results and a chance to make a run at the top spots entering the final weekend in March.

Cole and Chris arrived on Thursday morning to start practicing and made gains throughout all the practice sessions leading into Friday's qualifying. First up was Sunday's timed qualifying where Cole would compete to place as high as possible in the 40 kart field. Aiming to qualify within the top 10, Cole came short with a P12 performance. However, Saturday's timed session improved where he would qualify P6. He was in a position to make a run both days taking direct transfer spots into the prefinals and finals.

On Saturday, starting on the outside of row 3, it was imperative he stayed out of trouble in Turn 1 and have a solid finishing position for the final. After the green flag dropped, Cole fell back a couple of spots to P9 before working his way into the top 5. As the race continued, he made gains on the lead pack and overtook P4 and was making a final charge at the top 3. With two laps left, he had pulled within striking distance of P3, but a mistake in the infield left him with P4 at the checkered. While in a great position for the final, Cole again found himself on the outside of the starting order but was able to come out of turn 1 in P5. There was a 10 kart break away from the field very early in the race and eventually moved to a 7 kart pack. By midrace, Cole had moved into P4 where he would score a top five finish and make a jump six spots in the series points.

On Sunday, he would have more of a challenge as he started in P12. At the drop of the green flag, Cole quickly found himself in the midst of a red flag incident as half the field piled up in Turn 1. Chris quickly made repairs, and Cole was ready for the restart. Out of Turn 1, Cole was in P9 where he would track down a few more spots before the drop of the flag and take P6 for the final start of the weekend. In the final, Cole had a horrible start leaving room for several karts to move underneath and found himself coming out of Turn 1 in P13 with the lead pack already pulling away. Cole worked his way back up to P9 before the checkered flag waved. While he was a top five kart, the start kept him from making a second consecutive run at a top 5. Despite the finish, Cole was able to string together solid results all weekend and move up considerably in the points standings.

Cole will return for the final round of the series sitting 5th overall in points and hopes to build on the momentum from this weekend. Cole’s next race is the 5th and 6th rounds, March 25-27 in Ocala, Florida.
