After an extremely successful launch to the 2011 Florida Winter Tour last weekend, the Tour gets set to host another full round of races this weekend at The Orlando Kart Center. This weekend it will feature the FWT Rotax Max Challenge taking center stage for the first of three events that make up the Max Challenge portion of the Florida Winter Tour.
Big names continue to flock to the Florida Winter Tour and this weekend is no exception. Indy Car stars Dan Wheldon and Alex Tagliani, multi time Australian karting champion David Serra, UK/CIK karting champion Jack Hawksworth and current DD2 Max Challenge Grand Finals champion Daniel Morad are set to compete. In addition, American heavyweights like Daniel Formal and Nick Neri, both front runners at La Conca, look to be serious contenders in Orlando.
This year the Florida Winter Tour is experiencing a tremendous leap in pre-entries, and it appears FWT will retain its title as the world’s largest official Rotax Max Challenge Series. This is partly due to the fantastic awards available. Of course the coveted Rotax Grand Finals spots are on the line for DD2, DD2 Masters, Max Senior and Max Junior. However, another reason for excitement is the unprecedented $50,000 FWT / Skip Barber Racing Awards Program. Dubbed “Doin’ The Double” by Formula Kart Productions President Bill Wright, the FWT/SBRS “Doin’ The Double” program provides an extra incentive for any driver that can excel in both FWT Series.
Any driver who wins the 2011 FWT Points Championships in both Rotax and TaG Senior, or in both Rotax and TaG Junior, will receive a Skip Barber 3-day Racing School, a 2-day Advanced Racing School, and paid entry into eight official Skip Barber Summer Regional Racing series races.
If no driver “Does the Double” then the driver who accumulates the most combined points in Rotax and Tag Senior, and the driver who accumulates the most combined points in Rotax and Tag Junior, will each receive a Skip Barber 3-day Racing School, a 2-day Advanced Racing School and 50% of the entry costs for up to eight official Skip Barber Summer Regional series races*.
With these awards up for grabs you can bet there will be a lot of emphasis throughout the year on the point totals in both series. Who will be in contention? Who will step up from the mid-pack to take their shot at the title? And the real question, can anyone actually Do The Double?
Last weekend FWT Live! debuted it’s new setup with a widescreen format and more cameras than ever before. The system was a big success with thousands of viewers that lit up the live interactive FWT Live blog. FWT Live remains the only program of its kind.
