RPG Wins Rotax Pan American Championships

10/9/2010

The inaugural season of the Rotax Pan American Championship wrapped up on the West Coast at the Calspeed Karting Center on the grounds of the Auto Club Speedway NASCAR facility. The Rotax Pan American series is modeled after the popular Rotax Euro Challenge where top racers from multiple countries battle for invitations to the annual Rotax World Finals. Team RPG’s Derek Wang (DD2) had clinched the championship in the penultimate round in Homestead, FL, while Mike Daniel (Masters) entered the weekend as the favorite for the Master’s championship.

Having missed the previous round of the championship in Homestead, Mike Daniel needed a solid performance to add the Pan Am Championship win to his already impressive 2010 season. While he wasn’t the fastest kart in the early practice and qualification rounds, the 2010 Gatorz Challenge Of The Americas champ worked tirelessly to improve in every session to end up with a second place finish in the final event on Sunday. His consistency and speed throughout the season earned him the 2010 Rotax Pan American Master’s Championship win.

With the DD2 championship secured, Derek Wang traded his paddle shifters for D2 tires and entered the Calspeed round in the ultra competitive Senior division. Needing very little time to adjust, Derek was mixing it up with championship contenders throughout the weekend. Unfortunately, first lap incidents in the final event on both days had him playing catch up to the field. Nevertheless, Wang gained valuable racing experience that will prepare him for the Rotax World Finals in November.
