The IKF Region 6 Gold Cup series season ender was hosted by the brand new race facility Sumas International Motorsport Academy (SIMA) last weekend. Although the forecast called for rain the entire weekend, both Friday practice and Saturday race day saw gorgeous blue skies. By Sunday afternoon the rain could not hold off any longer, and came down in buckets. Still, after a quick driver’s meeting, strong competition beat out mother nature and the racing continued.
IKF Region 6 attracts racers from the west coast including British Columbia, Canada, Washington and Oregon. Race 9 at SIMA wrapped up the series for the 2010 season. The largest turnout of the weekend was the shifter class, where the competition was tight. Congratulations to SIMA Club Member Remo Ruscitti for clenching the Shifter championship. Even in the classes where the numbers were lower the racing was exciting and action packed. The large number of spectators were treated to some spectacular racing talent that was present in all classes.
The biggest winners of the weekend were Jr. Leopard driver Keagen Laithwaite and Senior Leopard driver Scott Hargrove. Both drivers won a trip to the 2010 SKUSA Supernationals sponsored by Italian Motors USA. All leopard competitors look forward to the year end banquet where the Italian Motors USA draw for the two Leopard Engines will take place. The annual IAME cup trophies will also be presented at year end banquet to all IAME cup winners. Remember you must attend the banquet to qualify for the draw.
Saturday nights “Ladies Race to Utopia” & Mechanics/Dads race was a huge success. SIMA’s rental karts were rolled out of the garage for the event with a total of 30 competitors. Congratulations to Susan Wick who won the $100 gift certificate to the spa and John Knowles who made his karting comeback debut after sitting out for 20 years.
SIMA would like to thank all who attended the Gold Cup Race, especially those who volunteered their time to help facilitate the event. Gold cup marked the end of the summer series however SIMA is currently in the process of organizing their winter championship series. Details about the series will be released in the upcoming weeks.
