“Fast times and strong runs lead to difficult results”

September 14, 2010 – While recent news from Position One Motorsports has been about pole positions, victories and championships, the luck turned on the California based team this past weekend at the Pacific Association of Karters (PAK) hosted event at the Apex Karting Center. Looking for race wins, Position One Motorsports drivers showed speed and ran at the front of the pack before problems began in the main events.
“Sometimes you just have tough weekends,” explained Luis Martinez, owner of Position One Motorsports. “We have been on a high note as of late and these things happen. It’s racing. As a team, we will take all the high notes of the weekend and all of our data and move on to the next event.”
Once again the bounty was on for P1 Engines powered Maddox drivers Nick Johnston and Bobby Kelley. The duo has been on a tear throughout the 2010 season and have taken home a lot of hardware on their way to fast laps, race wins and multiple championships.
Competing in the PRD Spec Senior category, Kelley got the best of the field as he took the pole position with a blistering lap. Johnston’s troubles would start there as a broken clutch would see the talented competitor only lay down one lap in his hunt for a front row starting spot. The action started in the prefinal as Johnston would begin his march forward from the tail of the field. After making several passes, the Maddox driver would finish in the sixth position and secure a third row starting spot for the main event. Kelley continued with his momentum as he took the lead early on the talented field of drivers. After battling hard in the opening laps, Kelley went on to take the heat race win and pole position for the final later that day.
The main event provided the fireworks for the day as Kelley would be on the point and Johnston would look to work his way forward. However, Johnston’s race was short lived as the mechanical gremlins reared their ugly head and a broken throttle shaft took him out of contention for the win and he was forced to settle with a tenth place result. Leaving the pressure on Kelley to score the win, he began an epic battle with a fellow competitor that would see the duo make several passes on one another in the final few circuits. Kelley would show his aggressiveness in an event to take the lead back on the final lap but would come up short and have to settle for the second step on the podium.
Position One Motorsports entered one driver in the junior divisions as Skylar Estrada would do battle in the KPV 1 class. Utilizing a P1 Engines powered Maddox chassis, Estrada qualified in the seventh position and had a solid run in the prefinal to finish fifth. Things were looking good for Estrada in the main event as it looked as if a top five result was possible for the youngster, but a last lap, last corner incident forced him to retire from the event and eventually be classified in the nineteenth position.
Team Manager Colin McGinnis stated, “We have a strong team and will rebound from this weekend with great success. We have a lot more races in 2010 and more chances to take victories.”
Next on the docket for Position One Motorsports is the International Karting Federation (IKF) Region 7 event at Adams Motorsports Park on the October 2nd and 3rd weekend.
