Phil Giebler wins at Buttonwillow, extends points lead in SKUSA Pro Kart
Phil Giebler started from pole and led all 20 laps to win the TaG Senior
main event Saturday (June 26) the Superkarts! USA Pro Karts South Round 5 at
Buttonwillow (Calif.) Raceway Park.
Giebler, of Huntington Beach, Calif., finished 4.261 seconds of Billy
Cleavelin. The 2007 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year also had the fastest lap of the
race, averaging 50.301 mph (49.383 seconds) around the .7-mile, 11-turn
Giebler, 30, and Cleavelin dueled throughout the event, renewing an old
rivalry that goes back to Giebler’s teenage years.
Giebler was the second fastest qualifier, behind Cleavelin, and finished
second by .378-second to Cleavelin in the first 10-lap heat race. Giebler won
the second 10-lap heat race by 1.501 seconds over runner-up Cleavelin.
“My weekend went great,” Giebler said. “I won the second heat, started
from the pole and led every lap. I extended my points lead in the SKUSA Pro
Kart Challenge. I raced hard against Billy Cleavelin, who was a rival back when
I was 16 years old. It was very good, hard, but clean racing.”
Phil Giebler Racing teammate Chris Cricca, a 16-year-old from Westlake
Village, Calif., finished fifth in the main event in TaG Senior.
“Chris is showing a lot of potential,” Giebler said.
Cricca qualified in sixth position, finished sixth in the first heat and
fourth in the second heat.
Giebler and Cricca drove FA Karts powered by 125cc water-cooled Vortex
Racing engines built by Daniel Patino’s D Power Engines of Huntington Beach,
Calif., and were on MG tires.
Phil Giebler Racing, based in Orange, Calif., will next compete July 16-18
in the Mother’s Polish SummerNationals, the second event of the SKUSA North
American Pro Tour at USA International Raceway in Shawano, Wis. Giebler took
back-to-back main event victories in the opening two rounds April 16-17 at
the Jim Russell International Karting Center at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma,
Calif., and is the point leader in the three-event national championship
