The second weekend of the growing Rotax Pan American series took place at the New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana. Located just outside of Indianapolis, this one mile kart circuit is considered one of the finest in the country and will play host to the 2010 US Rotax Grand Nationals. Team RPG drivers Mike Daniel (Masters) and Derek Wang (DD2) looked to continue their Pan Am championship run and prepare for the upcoming Grand Nationals at this event. Also joining the team for this event is Hammer Nutrition sponsored driver Brandon Scheiber (Junior).
Classified second in the Masters championship, Mike Daniel entered the weekend with the goal of leaving with the points lead. Daniel had his work cut out for him as the class featured a strong field of drivers from coast to coast. Nevertheless, the reigning National Champion was fastest in all but one official practice session despite this being his first trip to New Castle. In Saturday competition, Daniel scored the win in the pre-final and main event to capture his first Pan Am gold medal. A pre-final win and second place in the main earned Daniel a silver medal but catapulted him to the Masters championship lead for the series.
After two hat tricks with pole, fastest lap, and event wins in rounds 1 and 2 in Houston, Derek Wang faced stiff competition from professional race drivers, National Champions, and three past Team USA members in the DD2 class. Wang proved that his success in Houston was no fluke by annihilating the field by 2.2 seconds in a damp qualifying session on Saturday. A bad start in the Saturday main event had him shuffled back to fourth but he methodically worked his way back to the front and pulled off a perfectly timed pass in the last corner of the last lap to claim his third consecutive Pan Am gold medal.
Competing at the national level for his first year and in the DD2 for his third weekend ever. Wang responded to post race interviewers by saying - “It is quite a privilege to race against guys who have accomplished so much in the sport of karting. These guys were winning national championships and making a living in karting before I even knew the sport existed. My RPG tuned package was fast all weekend and I’m confident we’ll continue to do well in the rest of the series.”
With 39 entries, the junior class had some of the most exciting racing of the weekend. Brandon Scheiber battled through the field and gained valuable experience for the upcoming Grand Nationals.
Team RPG will make their way back to New Castle, Indiana in July for the 2010 US Rotax Grand Nationals. Mike Daniel will look to defend his National Champion title while the team will aim to earn their entries to the World Finals in La Conca, Italy.
