Modeled after the highly popular Rotax Euro Challenge where competitors across countries compete for entries into the Rotax Grand Finals, the Rotax Pan American Challenge held its inaugural race on April 23rd-25th at the MSR Houston kart track. Team RPG drivers Mike Daniel (Masters) and Derek Wang (DD2) made the trip to Houston, TX for the event.
Having competed in only one other DD2 event, Derek Wang looked to capitalize on the new series and earn a trip to the 2010 Rotax World Finals in Italy. Having completed official practice in the front of the field. Wang went on to overcome engine problems to finish the weekend at the top position for all timed and race sessions. Never fully satisfied, Wang made a promise during the post race interview that the best is yet to come – “I’m obviously happy that we got maximum points for this weekend, but we’re going to look for more speed in this DD2 and go to Indiana better prepared.”
The Master’s category showcased the premiere Rotax masters racers from East and West. Robby Mott earned an entry to the Pan Am series through his success in the 2010 Florida Winter Tour. Attending on a Team USA Pan Am free entry, defending National Champion Mike Daniel had just came off of winning the West Coast Rotax Gatorz Challenge of the Americas series. The battle between the two veterans would not disappoint as Robby and Mike ran a race of their own in the front of the pack. Unfortunately for RPG’s Mike Daniel, Robby used his home track advantage to take the win on both days with Mike taking home the silver medals.
Round 3 & 4 of the Rotax Pan American Challenge is set to take place June 11-13 at New Castle Motorsports Park in New Castle, IN.
