Kathryn Cornell has already put up stellar numbers in the beginning of 2010 with wins and podium finishes. At the Pro Tour Opener at Infineon Raceway of Sonoma, CA Cornell continued her progression into Cars with another top notch performance.
On day one of the two day event Cornell was fast out of the box running second quick in TAG Jr practice. In qualifying she had electrical problems placing her Intrepid 5th on the charts. Bad luck struck Kathryn in the Heat race as she was unable to make the start with continuing electrical problems. Coming from the back in the second heat electrical issues continued after she had quickly moved to fifth causing her to DNF and place her at the back of the field for the final, and some hard work to get to the front. In the final Kathryn Cornell made some daring passes to move through the pack. With only 15 laps however she ran out of time, but was still able to earn a fourth place finish.
Day 2 had a different outcome for Cornell. Suffering from some bad luck on Day one, Kathryn knew she had a kart capable of winning and wanted to show as much, however throughout the day she received new mechanical issues after resolving the ones from the day prior. The new Mechanical problems were failing water pumps. She was 2nd fastest in morning warm up. In qualifying Cornell put her Intrepid on top of the field with fast time, 2 tenths faster than the nearest Kart. In the Heat races Cornell gathered a couple of thirds to ensure a solid starting position for the Final. Kathryn ran steady in third position for most of the Final keeping her kart clean and in good position for the end of the race. As laps wound down, the second water pump failure began draining horsepower from her power plant. However the two leaders got together and this allowed Cornell to cruise to her first National Win and the first of the Pro Tour Series.
Next for Kathryn is the Prairie City Crossover Rancho Cordova, Ca where she will compete in HPV 2 Jr against Norcal’s top HPV 2 drivers. Then following PC she will be back at Infineon Raceway Sonoma, Ca for the Prokart Challenge competing in both HPV-2 Jr and Tag Jr looking to do another sweep.
