Rock Island Grand Prix Announces Class Lineup for Labor Day 2010 Event
The Rock Island Grand Prix, the world’s largest karting street race presented by AT&T, has announced its class lineup for 2010. New to the program is what organizers believe will be the biggest 4-cycle International (clone) sprint race of the year.
“Adding clones at Rock Island was a difficult decision,” said RIGP president Roger Ruthhart. “On one hand we do not wish to see this package promoted at the national level because it would be detrimental to the purity of the class. It should remain a basic, stock, entry-level program. On the other hand, we have an opportunity at Rock Island, unlike virtually any other karting event, to exposure huge numbers of spectators to the sport. At a time when everyone is sensitive to economics and our sport needs more new blood, the clones offer an opportunity for more people to get into and experience our sport.
“We see this as an exposure opportunity and clones as a way to rejuvenate 4-cycle Briggs & Stratton sprint racing, which is something we are passionate about. There are huge numbers of clone racers in the area who have asked us to consider their class, which we have done. We expect to have to run a Last Chance Qualifier in this class which will just give us another chance to showcase this racing opportunity to spectators,” said Ruthhart.
The karts and motors in the 4-cycle International or clone class will undergo strict pre-race safety and motor tech on Friday. They will pay a lower entry fee and no purse will be paid. Once approved by officials, motors will be painted. Other 4-cycle classes will be Animal Heavy and the “Rumble at The Rock” Animal Medium feature race.
Other adjustments to the race lineup over what was run in 2009 are minimal.
The RIGP will run Rotax Senior and Rotax Junior classes in 2010. Rotax Masters will now run with TAG Masters, not its own class. Junior Yamaha has been dropped. Other TAG classes will be TAG Senior and Masters as well as IAME Leopard.
Superkarts! USA’s King of the Streets race will again be the headline event of the weekend and feature Honda stock moto power. The North American Street Championship race will run as KZ2 this year. The 125cc Masters G1 class will also remain on the schedule and be open to tuned moto drivers as young as 25 who are not national-level drivers.
Yamaha Medium and Heavy can classes will again be offered as will 2-cycle Pipe Heavy which includes Yamaha, HPV and KPV motors.
‘The Rock’ is proud to continue its long-term partnerships with Superkarts! USA and TAG USA. As always, organizers retain the right to alter the program. Classes that do not have adequate entries by August 1 may be dropped, Ruthhart said.
Additional announcements regarding plans for several specific classes will follow shortly. Registration is expected to begin online in early March. Previous competitors and those on the contact list will receive postcards and email notifications when registration has been opened and announcements will be made on karting forums.
“We are excited about the program we are putting forth this year, both on the race track and with additional ancillary festival-weekend activities. We have been working hard to keep our event among the premier one-off races in the sport and in the process have added some exciting new partners with additional announcements to follow soon.
Earlier in the week, the RIGP announced the addition of O’Reilly Auto Parts and Kids Racing For Kids foundation as event sponsors, and the return of AT&T as a Presenting Sponsor for the 16th year.
“Rock Island has always been the one place where all forms of karting come together for great racing and great camaraderie. Never will that be more evident than in 2010. This is one event that everyone – TAG, shifter, Rotax, 2-cycle, 4-cycle, Leopard and clones – will want to have on their race calendar,” said Ruthhart. Dates for this year’s event are Sept. 4-5.
