With over $130,000 in cash and prizes including a brand new Mazda 3 to the Rotax Senior Champion, the CKI Florida Cup series is one of the most anticipated championships in North American kart racing. Taking place over three weekends between January and March, the series has attracted some of the most talented racers in the world. For the RPG tuned Joey Wimsett, the CKI Florida Cup is also his debut race for the SSC East CRG team.
In one of the biggest off season moves, Joey Wimsett begins a new relationship with one of the largest karting names in the world. Joining forces with top American drivers Gary Carlton (KZ) and Arie Ouimet (KF & Rotax Sr) at SSC East, Joey will continue his national racing campaign onboard the CRG chassis.
With the biggest prize and the largest class of the event, the Rotax Senior class had many of karting’s biggest names and most promising young drivers. Amongst the karters were Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon and Sarah Fisher Racing driver Jay Howard looking to take a stab at winning the prize.
Despite not having a lot of track time with CRG, Joey was immediately on pace as he set the fastest time during Friday practice. Unfortunately, engine problems put a damper on Joey’s Saturday qualifying and heat race. Starting 10th in the final event, Joey made a heroic drive through the field to finish 3rd on the podium.
The CKI Florida Cup will continue in February in Homestead. Team RPG will be back on the West Coast at the Challenge of the Americas race in Fontana, California on February 26th.
