RPG Storms Into Phoenix For Challenge Of Americas
Article By: Rolison Performance Group
The first two rounds of the 2010 Gatorz Challenge of the Americas series took place in Phoenix, Arizona. Traditionally a safe bet for sunny weather during the winter, the “Gator Nation” was greeted with one of the biggest storms in recent history. After a track evacuation which cancelled Thursday practice, the show was able to go on and Team RPG continued its podium streak.
Alec Bergstrom (Mini Max) joins 2009 Team RPG drivers Mike Daniel (Masters) and Derek Wang (Senior) for the 2010 Gatorz Challenge of the Americas six race winter series. The Phoenix trip also saw Stepanova Nekeel (Senior), Joey McGuire (Masters), Parker McKean (Junior), and Sting Ray Robb (Mini Max) travel and pit with the Team.
Entering the Master’s class as one of the favorites, Mike Daniel did not disappoint as he scored 3rd and 2nd place finishes in Phoenix. The crowd had expected to see a close battle between Daniel and his long time nemesis Paul Bonilla, most were surprised by the pace of Master’s new comer Joey McGuire. Having moved up from the senior category, McGuire put in some great lap times and was able to secure 2nd place on day one but suffered multiple mechanical failures on day two.
The highly contested senior category saw the first 14 competitors qualify within half a second and the top 20 within one second on both days. No one gave an inch as almost everyone in the field had a chance for glory. Team RPG’s Derek Wang battled in the top 10 but had his first day cut short in a turn 1 crash. Wanting to make sure to finish, he drove a conservative race to 11th on the second day. Stepanova Nekeel had the raw pace and racecraft to win but was hounded by mechanical mishaps that brought black flags to his weekend.
Running as high up as 3rd, Alec Bergstrom had a positive debut at his first Challenge of Americas weekend with quick lap times and a top 5 finish.
RPG will compete in the first round of the Championship Karting International (CKI) Florida Cup in Homestead, Florida at the end of January before heading back to the West Coast for the 3rd and 4th round of the Gatorz Challenge of the Americas in Fontana, CA.
