After a week of intense battles, RPG driver Joey Wimsett of Champion Racing Intrepid emerges from the International Rotax Grand Finals in 4th place.
Each year, the Rotax Grand Finals is held to crown the World’s best Rotax driver from the Junior, Senior, and DD2 categories. Champions from over 60 countries are invited to the event where drivers compete in identical karts supplied by Rotax. In 2009 the event was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, three past and present team RPG drivers represented Team USA. With Joey Wimsett and Stepanova Nekeel in the Senior class and Mike Daniel in the DD2 Masters category.
Entering the event as the eKartingnews.com number one ranked TaG driver, Joey Wimsett was looking to score a good finish for Team USA. Competing against 72 other drivers, he qualified as the best American Senior in 12th place. Bettering his solid qualifying performance, Joey went on to win the first heat race with a dominating four second gap to second place. After seeing his fellow Team USA teammates get collected in crashes throughout the heats, Wimsett maintained his composure and went on to score a 7th and a 2nd place in the remaining qualifying heats.
With less than half of the grid qualifying to race in the final day, Joey starts the pre final in 3rd place. Having battled hard amongst the leaders throughout the pre final, he would cross the line having lost one spot in 4th place. With the North Americans buzzing in anticipation for a podium or maybe a win in the final, the intense pressure was on for Joey to score the best ever North American finish in Grand Finals history.
At the start of the final, Joey held the fourth spot right away and set his sights to move up the field. After some spectacular moves, he was able to get into the second spot by lap 2. As more battling continued, he was eventually shuffled back to P4 as the leaders began to pull out. One more place was eventually lost in the 25 lap race as Joey crosses the finish in 5th place. After an exclusion of the third place finisher, Joey was eventually promoted to 4th place. Marking the best finish by an American driver in the Senior class of the world finals.
