PGP Winter Series Round 1 Recap

This past weekend, the PGP Winter Series kicked off its campaign with its first multi-class event of the year. Five different classes of karts took to the pavement to battle it out in absolutely stunning weather conditions. The event featured close racing, a great and positive atmosphere among both staff and competitors, enthusiasm for the future and a new PGP track record in the bargain.

Dorion Ford led off the festivities by winning the Rotax Master/Jr. Moto class with a fast lap of 1:06:056, followed by Jeff Thomas and Patrick Leahy. The Rotax Micro/Mini/TaG Cadet race which followed was marked by a furious battle for the lead between Mathew Morgan and Parker Portalski, with Portalski gaining the upper hand with a 1:06:056 fastest lap.

The best battle was in the Rotax Sr./TaG Sr. race for third place after Derek Wang and AJ Fugitt broke away from the pack. Brittney Cusack, Brandon Cusack and Anthony Halcrow slugged it out for the final podium spot, with Halcrow finding an opening with only two laps to go and securing third place. Wang’s best lap time was a 1:02:391.

Brandon Shriber’s day looked to be a long one during the Rotax Jr./TaG Jr. event after starting at the back of the pack. His “day long journey” to the podium, as one spectator described it, ended with him storming to a surprising and welcome 2nd place finish behind Kyle Byers’s 1:02:410 fast-lap and just ahead of Joseph Schwager.

The final race of the day featured the S3 Moto/S2 Moto/G1 (ICC) class. First-time driver Brian Frank thrilled the crowd as he battled for the final podium spot with Bob Kim in his inaugural race, with Kim edging him for third at the end. Jim Lilleberg posted an impressive 1:01:470 lap time en route to second place, but it was Christopher Barkley who took home top honors in his class and for the whole day as he blistered the PGP asphalt in a new track record 1:00:137!

PGP wishes to congratulate all of our drivers on a fun and exciting inaugural event. A complete list of results provided by MyLaps.com is available under the “Racing at PGP” tab (click KART RACING -> RESULTS for the event results page).
