Three weekend, six-round championship to be contested in Colorado this season
TEMECULA, CALIFORNIA (March 27, 2014) – The Rocky Mountain area has experienced growth in the sport of karting the last few seasons, thanks in part to a strong core of racers, popular facilities, and hosting the Superkarts! USA SummerNationals for the past three seasons. The organization’s regional programs are always looking to improve by providing the most exciting and customer-friendly race weekends – offering that true SKUSA experience – while keeping the racer’s budget in mind. The Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge embodies those goals each and every year, and 2014 will be no different as the series is set to contest three double-event weekends that will make up a six-round championship program, utilizing two challenging circuits.
“Series competitors and industry members have all voiced their opinions, and now we are moving forward with a schedule that is cost effective and allows our members to attend any national event and still compete in the regional series,” commented Superkarts! USA National Operations Director Stan Bryniarski. “The 2014 Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge schedule was created to provide the optimal dates without conflicts. With both the Spring and SummerNationals geographically different for 2014, and the amount of Rocky Mountain SKUSA members and teams who participate, careful consideration was taken to the racers’ budget and to minimize those conflicts. We are happy with the final schedule and classes that we are offering for the upcoming season. We welcome all racers to come out and see what the program has to offer. The area is a hotbed for karting, thanks to supportive facilities and a thriving regional program. Now with this year’s plan in place, we feel the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge can race into another successful year.”
The 2014 program for the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge – in addition to all nine SKUSA regional classes – will include the seven categories of the United States Rotax Max Challenge. Drivers competing in the Rotax classes can secure ‘punches’ that count toward participation in the United States Rotax Grand Nationals, which will be held the third week of July in Tooele, Utah. Those racing in the SKUSA divisions will qualify for SuperNationals Priority Pre-Entry Program, along with class champions earning the guaranteed SuperSunday grid positions for the Las Vegas event in November (class must average five racers for the year in order to receive SuperSunday ticket).
New for 2014 is the opportunity for the growing Briggs & Stratton LO206 racers to come out and experience the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge, as the series will offer the grassroots category as a local option at all three events this coming season.
“I have received numerous calls and emails asking if there was a place for Briggs racers in the race day schedule,” noted Bryniarski. “We recognize the need to bring more racers into the sport and by giving these racers another weekend to race, it helps our sport grow and allows racers the ability to experience the Superkarts! USA program. We understand that this class spans across all clubs and tracks throughout Colorado and Utah, which have specific tire programs already in place. And thus, RMPKC will not specify the tires nor require any membership to participate in this class.”
More information on the LO206 class will be listed on the RMPKC website in the coming weeks.
For 2014, the championship will be a six-round program, counting the best five races toward the point championship. A 100-point bonus will be awarded to each racer who participates in all six events.
The opening weekend of the series will visit the first-class Grand Junction Motor Speedway – site of the 2011 and 2013 SKUSA SummerNationals – on May 23-25 in Grand Junction, Colorado. The pride of Colorado kart facilities, GJMS is a fast, flowing and yet technically challenging course to both drivers and tuners. Grand Junction Motor Speedway has supported the Rocky Mountain PKC the last four years, with racers returning the favor by providing not only strong turnouts, but also some of the best racing the series has seen.
Rounds Three and Four will take racers to SBR Motorsports Park in Calhan, Colorado. Previously known to racers of the region as CRE Motorsports, SBR is a half-mile long bullring that has been a staple of Colorado karting for many years. Renovations in the last couple of years have taken SBR Motorsports Park to the level necessary to host larger scale kart races, as the fast racetrack is sure to challenge competitors of all classes, while taking Colorado racers for a trip down memory lane during the June 20-22 weekend.
The final two rounds sends the series back to Grand Junction Motor Speedway to decide the championship on August 29-31. Both days of racing will be contested on the circuit in the opposite direction of the first visit. Following the final day of racing in Grand Junction, the Rocky Mountain PKC will host its championship banquet Sunday night at a location to be announced.
